Frederic Walker has a degree in Education from the University of Alberta and a degree in history from
the University of Saskatchewan; he spent a year working in Paulatuk, Northwest Territories.


This collection provides diverse views of northern Canada from the 1940s, the 1960s, and the 1990s.
Miscellaneous also contains a Prosperity Certificate issued by the Government of the Province of
Alberta in 1936. It is divided into four series:

I. Yukon.

1. Nettie Hoge - Personal Correspondence. - [ca. 1942-43, 1945]

Three personal letters written by Mrs. Nettie Hoge, wife of the General of the Army (U.S.)
William Hoge. William Hoge was the “hero of Remagen bridge,” 1945, and superintended the
building of the Alaska Highway.

Two of the letters provide interesting comments on natives and life in the Yukon
generally; the third provides information on Europe and Berlin specifically, immediately
following Germany’s surrender in World War II.

A note indicating the custodial history of these letters is included in the file.


II. Paulatuk, Northwest Territories.

Photographs in this series are all colour images.

III. Miscellaneous Photographs.

The majority of these photographs document the transportation of goods to and from northern
uranium mines, via the Athabasca, Peace, and Clearwater rivers, during the 1960s. Many of
the images are of northern settlements, including Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray. These
are the original prints; the negatives have been lost or destroyed. All of the prints are black and
white.
